Q of the Continuum (6/7/2006) Having said that, if I read this book where 'Trip Lives' then it might be the 'undo' button for TATV and make me feel better about the closure of Enterprise. Well anything is possible. Nope, it certainly won't do that. Apart from a weird prologue and epilogue in which it's clear Trip is alive until old age, there's nothing to undo TATV, and no explanation of why or how he's still alive. The book concentrates on the supposed animosity between the MACOs and the Starfleet crew - and in doing so makes the MACOs look like a bunch of macho reckless idiots. I kept on reading in the hopes that something - anything - would become clear eventually, but alas no. I will, of course, buy any Enterprise books that are published - anything to show TPTB the fans are still there - but I don't hold out any great expectations for the literary merits of Trek books these days. Even when they have a good author too often the books are churned out with far too little attention to detail and often with inexusable canon errors. And the actual quality of the writing can be cringe-worthy. I did quite enjoy What Price Honour, largely because it was a Malcolm story. But again, it concentrated too much on the lead character and on one of the author's original characters. And the plot was confusing to say the least - or possibly just not well explained. The author David Stern is clearly an Enterprise fan - he also wrote Deadalus - but does seem to only be able to write for one character at a time rather than for the ensemble cast. JM Dillard on the other hand, who I though was supposed to be a good and experienced Trek author, made a right hash of Surak's Soul with major canon errors throughout - and by turning Malcolm into a wealthy landower, both in London and South America, she seems to think that British must mean landed gentry! I think after reflecting on your comments, I should steer well clear of Trek books!!! LOL. I think one of the aspects that has put me off in the past is that they tend to be inconsistent with the series, and like you say, arn't always very well written. I think for safety sake, and if not for sanity sake, I should contently dwell in riveting titles such as 'Database Design and Programming', 'Dummies Guide to Microsoft Access 2003', 'Microsoft Excel 2003 Bible', and 'SQL for Boring People'. At least nobody meets their demise or encounters a resurrection in such books! Thanks for the advice!

| | That last episode was terrible! Why would they decide to kill of the best actor and the most popular character on the show? It makes no sense- In the DVD SEasons 1-4 Collection there is a special section devoted to Connor, where the producers praise Connor's acting abilities, and they compare Connor's Star Trek acting ability to that of Brent Spiner.- They are basicaly telling us what we already know- Connor is a very special actor who stands out from the rest of the Enterprise cast- just as Brent Spiner/Data did for Star Trek TNG. Connor/ Connor's character of Trip was the one character that people really liked and related to the most. So WHy KILL THIS CHARACTER OFF? I could see if they had planned for another season to do the typical - Crewman Daniels- go back in time and fix it thing-whereby Trip wouldnt get fried up- with those aliens. Why not have Malcolm's men do their jobs- instead of Trip having to do 2 jobs- chief engineer and security guy. Ths way -one of the red shirt- security guys could get fried and Trip would be saved!! YEH They could have done an old sling shot around the sun/ go back in time maneuver- as in the old Star Trek series. It could also have just been T'Pol missing her relationship wih Trip and hence the last episode could have been T'Pols nightmare. If they needed to kill off a charater-Why not kill off one who's demise would not enrage so many fans of Connor/Trip. Maybe kill of Shran- who was actualy a guest character anyway- no big loss there. If a main charater had to die- Why not Hoshie?, simply because her character was one of the least developed ones on the show?? I guess TV is basically just like real life- When something is clear and makes sense- The opposite always happens. (JPrestig) |
