His accent wasn't bad. It's obvious that he's paid attention, and he had a lot of the form of it right. It wasn't stereotype or caricature, for which I was grateful. However, it wasn't perfect - it did sound like a foreign actor doing an Irish accent, and it certainly didn't sound like Cork, but so be it. He did rather well, I thought, for someone who isn't from Ireland.

Irish accents are tough for non-natives to get right. They're like Boston accents, in that way. First, they aren't heard in the media as often as, say, standard British or New York, so there's less familiarity. Second, they're simply hard to nail. I've seen actors who are fairly gifted mimics, who nail, say, New York, and who study and study the Boston accent, with good coaches, for a role, and still cannot quite get it, not at the core. They get the surface, but not the core. Irish accents seem to be the same way, for most actors.

But at least it wasn't down to stereotype and crap like that. I mean, we've heard some HORRIBLE Irish accents on film, have we not? Think Tom Cruise in "Far and Away", and you'll get my meaning. And that tends to be more the norm than what Dominic did, which again, wasn't half bad.

And I freely admit, the Cork accent is a tough one.

I know this is a little bit late out of the gate, so to speak, but there's a little video interview with Dominic on the NBC website.  Can be found here...

It's a little bit temperamental, so you might have to stick with it.  He's in the second half of the interview and explains about his character, which of course if you've seen the show you'll already know, but hey...  *shrug*  It's still cute.
