They head out to his isolated cabin for an impromptu leaving party, to find him packing up his possessions. He's reluctant at first to say why he's leaving but, as the party progresses, they persuade him to divulge the reason for his resignation. No one's prepared for the amazing story he has to tell.......he claims to be immortal!
I loved this film, it's intelligent, thought-provoking and totally absorbing. The actors are brilliant.....some of their academic characters set out to disprove the Prof's claims by reasoned and good natured arguments, while others are upset and angry when the Prof carries on with his immortal claim. The acting's first rate......John's character is jovial and sympathetic to the Professor and John even gets in a Star Trek reference!

There are more Star Trek references......the writer, Jerome Bixby, wrote episodes for Star Trek: TOS (Mirror Mirror being the most famous one), Richard Riehle, who plays a psychiatrist, was in the Augments and Cold Station episodes of Enterprise and Tony Todd, who's one of the academics, was in ST:DS9, ST:TNG and ST: Voyager!

An excellent film and I recommend it! :)

The Nine on UK 30th July

At last I'll finally get to see it :D

Five US Wednesday 30th July at 10pm.

Note from John re: Jumpcon

Hi everybody! In addition to posting this brief note on my website, I've asked for it to be circulated where it might be seen because I want to announce that I will not be attending Jumpcon in Boston on the weekend of the l8th, l9th, 20th of July. I have asked the promoters to take my name and Bonita's name off their website. If our names remain on their website after the 11th Jumpcon is clearly engaging in a form of fraudulent advertising. Jumpcon's willingness to promote their conventions with such gusto in spite of the fact they clearly don't have sufficient funds to meet their contractual obligations would certainly lead me to question whether this is an organization that fans should in any way support. I understand Bob Picardo has also posted some remarks re: Jumpcon that might be of interest to people. Thanks, and my deepest apologies to anybody who was looking forward to spending some quality drinking time in Boston with us this weekend. xox jb

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN

It's John's Birthday on 20th May so......
  HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN

Have a brilliant day! His family finally settled down in Weston, CT, where Billingsley had his southern drawl beaten out of him by Yankee children, and where he began to act in school plays, initially "A Christmas Carol," playing a ferocious (albeit gap-toothed and lisping) Ebenezer Scrooge.

He graduated Bennington College, in Bennington, VT, where he studied theatre with Nicholas Martin and literature with Bernard Malamud, and moved to Seattle upon graduation, where, over a fifteen year period, he appeared on regional stages both well and ill regarded. He toured Europe and portions of the U.S. for a bit with a Milwaukee-based experimental theatre company (Theatre X), whose production of "A History of Sexuality" featured him in such disparate roles as Sigmund Freud and the Marquis De Sade's valet.

His theater credits include "Candide," David Mamet's "Bobby Gould in Hell," "The Seagull," "The Birthday Party," "Great Expectations," "12th Night" and "Bitter Bierce" -- a one man show he produced himself about the life and times of Ambrose Bierce. He also played a Berber taxi-cab driver in "Ugly's First World" at The Actor's Gang -- some years back appearing opposite his lovely wife, Bonita Friedericy, who played Lady Jane Greystoke, aka Mrs. Tarzan (and who plays, coincidentally, Mrs. Egan Foote on "The Nine").

In l990 Billingsley founded a Seattle-based theatre company called Bookit, which was devoted to adapting fiction for the stage and which still flourishes in the Pacific Northwest. He also helped found an acting studio in Seattle called Freehold, also still flourishing, where he taught for seven years and helped to establish and run the company's theatrical production arm. Always active in a limited way in Seattle-based film and TV in the '80s, he decided to move to Los Angeles in 1995 to pursue those mediums more aggressively because (l) he was broke and (2) refer back to (1). After a brief and disastrous stint as a cotton candy spinner (tufts of cotton candy refused to adhere to the paper cones and instead plastered themselves on the faces and garments of frightened children), Billingsley caught a break and was cast in "NYPD Blue" as a pathetic and addled child molester.

Other guest star roles followed -- "The Practice," "Profiler," "Pretender," "Marshall Law," "Nash Bridges," "The X-Files," "Time of Your Life," "Judging Amy" and "Arli$$," among others. In l999 Stephen Spielberg cast him as Prof. Miles Ballard in "The Others." Additional guest starring work includes "The West Wing," "Six Feet Under," "Gideon's Crossing," "Star Gate," "The Huntress" and "Angel." In 2000 Billingsley was cast as Dr. Phlox in "Star Trek: Enterprise." Dr. Phlox was an eccentric alien with a whimsical sense of humor, and Billingsley wore the requisite rubber head for four seasons. He also has appeared on "Nip/Tuck," "Cold Case," "The Closer" and, in a recurring role, played the evil Vice President's hapless (and toothless) brother on "Prison Break."

Films along the way include "Out of Time" opposite Denzell Washington, "High Crimes," "The Glass House," "White Oleander," "Born to be Wild," "I Love You to Death," "A Cinderella Story" and "12 Dogs of Christmas," among others.

10-23-07 Note from John

HEY EVERYBODY OUT THERE IN THE ETHER. Too bad, cuz it was a fun show and I loved everybody associated with it very much - ABC will air the remaining episodes (we think) in the spring, but any hopes they (or anybody else) may have that a brand new audience will materialize out of the ether seem specious - So onward . . . Next . . . Currently shooting an episode of STANDOFF ( which is teetering on the lip of an empty grave itself). I am playing, surprise surprise, a frightened hostage! In fact, I'm being water-boarded tomorrow! Ah, the actor's life for me. Somewhat dubious this episode will even see the light of day, and in all honesty there's not a lot to it in any case (some whimpering, some screaming, maybe a soupcon of righteous indignation). Have oddments and endments scheduled (day or two here/there in indie films that will probably never see the light of day) and will keep y'all posted if/when something interesting materializes. MOST OF ALL: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANKYOU (belatedly, of course: with me that almost goes without saying) to everybody who took the time

to send Xmas wishes to the Xmas scrapbook ladies to compile for me - y'all astonish me, every year, with your generosity of spirit. The Xmas Scrapbook Ladies (hereafter known as XSCRAPGALS), in addition to making a lovely book for me, were wise enough to give me booze and music for Christmas, for which I thank them and anybody else who contributed to keeping me tipsy and tuneful over the holidays. Bonnie is well and sends her love - she's shooting a LEXUS commercial today, but is otherwise, like me, at professional sixes and nines. We're reading, though, and catching up on scut work and watching DVD's and obsessing about our cat's weight (less so our own, obviously, if you've seen any recent pictures) and otherwise living happy lives. Christianity: the Bible. Islam: the Koran. Hebrews: the Torah. The Boshongo tribe in Zaire: the creation myth of Bumba, who vomited into existence the Earth and all living creatures. Scientology: Dianetics and the story of Xenu, the alien conqueror.

These mythologies explain the world’s creation, humanity’s destiny, and they serve to codify the beliefs of these religions by telling stories about God or whatever deity has been cooked up. By definition, Atheism has no need for a mythology. Atheism is a non-belief. It is the absence of religion and belief in the existence of deities. The fact that we’re all gathered here today is kind of odd when you think about it, because we really have nothing to talk about other than our conviction that religion sucks, isn’t science great, and how the hell do we get the other 95% of the population to come to their senses?

We don’t believe anything. Therefore, we have no need for a mythology. And besides, even if we wanted one, what would it be exactly? Who would write it? Would it tell the story of the very first atheist? No doubt it would involve a great deal of persecution by his religious neighbors. Maybe we could invent some sort of Christ-like atheist tragedy. Then again, I have a feeling that anything we could come up with would probably be pretty boring. Without the historical events and supernatural catastrophes of most religious mythologies, we’d probably be left with the story of some atheist dude sitting in a room, reading a book.

But then again, like any good critical thinker, I have to reevaluate that assumption. Because in fact, I think we do need a mythology. And I think already we have one. As a group, atheists are disorganized and nomadic. A mythology could bind us together and help us articulate our goals in an entertaining and influential way. That’s what the Bible does. People cling to the Bible and quote it all the time. Atheists need to codify their non-belief and what that could mean for humanity if fully realized. We need a story. And it’s gotta be a pretty damned good one, packed with lots of different kind of fables and morality tales. It’s gotta be a pretty damned good one, packed with lots of different kind of fables and morality tales. It’s gotta be something rich and fairly long-lived with a somewhat fanatical following. Fortunately, this mythology already exists and is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary. It has tens of millions of followers. Many of whom, I suspect, are already leaning toward our way of thinking. And those followers may not be as fanatical, say, a right-wing fundamentalist, but if you’ve ever met a STAR TREK fan, they come pretty damned close.

STAR TREK, as conceived by Gene Roddenberry, portrays the epic saga of humanity’s exploration of space and, in turn, their own struggles as a species. Every episode and movie of STAR TREK is a morality tale in which human beings find solutions to conflict through enlightenment and reason. Through science. Through wit and intellect. Through a belief in our potential as animals that can supercede our baser instincts. In Gene Roddenberry’s imagining of the future (in this case the 23rd century), Earth is a paradise where we have solved all of our problems with technology, ingenuity, and compassion. There is no more hunger, war, or disease. And most importantly to the context of our meeting here today, religion is completely gone. Not a single human being on Earth believes in any of the nonsense that has plagued our civilization for thousands of years. This was an important part of Roddenberry’s mythology. He, himself, was a secular humanist and made it well-known to writers of STAR TREK and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION that religion and superstition and mystical thinking were not to be part of his universe. On Roddenberry’s future Earth, everyone is an atheist. And that world is the better for it.

40 years, 5 TV shows, 700 episodes and 11 movies. Not exactly as ancient or infamous as the Bible, but it’s a start. It’s been around for about as long as Scientology. Of course, STAR TREK is not a religion, although some fans might argue otherwise. It’s a vision of a world where religion has been vanquished and reason drives our hearts to explore ourselves more deeply. It is a template for a world that every single one of us in this room longs for. And in that regard, it is an atheistic mythology. STAR TREK is lively, action-packed and often profound. And its message is always the same: our inherent gifts of reason and compassion alone can solve any problem, and there is no time or place for a belief in something that doesn’t exist.

What does it mean to be an atheist? What kind of morality can you have? What are your ambitions and hopes? What would the world be like if religion disappeared? How could humanity possibly keep itself together? If anybody ever asks you these questions, tell them to watch STAR TREK. You know it’s funny – I worked on the show for 15 years and wrote over 150 episodes. And it didn’t occur to me until very recently that I was creating more than just entertainment, but a wider philosophical canvas that embodied my very own beliefs. I came all the way here from California to share my thoughts on the matter, and I encourage you to do with them what you will. We have a mythology. It’s been here all along. Let’s use it.

Religious mythologies have plenty of catchphrases. “Let there be light” “The meek shall inherit the Earth.” “You reap what you sow.” “What could Jesus do?” I’ll leave you with one of our own: “Live long and prosper.”

John's Holiday Project

http://geckoforums.isomedia.com/Forum42-1.aspx

Visit the link to find out about it!

Watch The Nine on ABC's website

If you couldn't watch it last Wednesday, you can find it here:

http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing

Star Trek Auction Oct 5th - 7th

For news of the auction, which is being held at Christie's, New York and for details of how to watch the auction live:

www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news/article/28956.html

Best Star Trek uniforms

Which were the best uniforms out of all the series and films?

Watch The Nine tonight!

msnbc.com review of The Nine (yet another mention of John)

Here's a review from msnbc.com:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14454350/page/4/

Is it “Lost?” Is it “24?” Nope, it’s “The Nine” (Wednesdays, 10 p.m. ET, ABC). The series revolves around a failed bank heist turned 52-hour hostage standoff that leaves two dead, and nine survivors with more issues than National Geographic.

Just what happened during those 52 hours is for the hostages to know and viewers to find out. Flashbacks to their harrowing captivity provide clues to each character’s metamorphosis. A cast of solid TV veterans makes this melodrama watchable. Tim Daly (“Wings”) is a good “cop on the edge,” and confident “Boston Public” principal Chi McBride is unrecognizable as the shell-shocked bank manager. Just like “Lost,” there’s a former “Party of Five” cast member playing doctor — though Scott Wolf’s MD lacks Island Jack’s moral fortitude. Omnipresent character actor John Billingsley (name a show, he’s been on it) makes the cliché of suicidal milquetoast-turned-hero believable. Though loaded with gimmicks, “The Nine” may have enough intrigue to keep viewers interested. —H.P
Time Magazine tv article mentions The Nine & John

The full article can be found here: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1535845,00.html
THE NINE ABC, WEDNESDAYS, 10 P.M. E.T.; PREMIERES OCT. 4 Late one fine afternoon, nine innocents are caught in a bank robbery. The hostages are rescued after a bloody 52-hr. ordeal. In between, life-changing things happen, some noble, some regrettable. But what, exactly? We don't see, and the answer is the key to this whydunit. It's a high-wire premise--how long can the series keep us in the dark about a riddle the characters all know the answer to? The tense pilot suggests the series has a few twists up its sleeve and a cast up to the challenge: as suicidal nerd turned hero Egan Foote, John Billingsley looks like the season's breakout character. Not only for how it teases out the brutal events inside the bank but also for how it shows the bonds among the survivors rebuilding their lives, this post-hostage drama is, well, captivating.

Have I got Q's for You

As everyone seems to enjoy 'Q's Line is it Anyway' on CT's forum, I thought this would be a good idea to increase the traffic on John's forum.
