Glad you had a good time!

I would have gone to the con (I am a poet but I didn't know it) but like I think I told you I went to Austrailia for five weeks with my cousin, Gary. I am sorry, but Austrailia was better! LOL. Hope you said hello from me! LOL. Was Patrick Stewart there?

I might go to the next one if Im'm not too busy - I enjoyed Expo last May and I would like to go to another.

RE: Creation Con in London

Thank Ron for your amazing chronicle........Pics are simply wonderful ;)....It was also there Lolita ?

RE: Creation Con in London

OK, here's the Con-report:

We have gone to Creation conventions before and our experience is that these are usually crowded and busy: many actors, many customers, and rather on the commercial side. We were therefore rather thrilled to encounter something different in London: a nice and quite intimate convention, smoothly run, and with just enough guests to make it interesting and to give each actor his or her time to ‘shine’.

We liked our seats: second row on the left but we hated the chairs: uncomfortable and too close together. But from that position we had a nice view, were able to shoot some nice pictures and communicate with the people on stage quite well.

We started on Friday afternoon with TOS celebrities
Walter Koenig (Chekov) and George Takei (Sulu). Both gentlemen still talk with relish about their adventures on the TOS set more than 40 years. Walter told us about his fan film project met Star Trek: New Voyages" and he elaborated on his reasons for doing this: he felt strongly that the Chekov character required some kind of closure.
One day later we were fortunate to witness the result. For an hour the entire audience watched breathlessly (and shedding the occasional tears) the episode "To Serve all my days", written by D.C. Fontana and as far as we are concerned highly recommended for any TOS and Star Trek fans. This production shows what other fan films should be striving for: wonderful story telling, sound acting by a talented cast (whom we saw perform in 2005’s stage rendition of “Spock’s Brain”) and fantastic SFX.

George was his usual shiny self, a nice and kind man who is also involved with fan film projects.
The evening program encompassed a cabaret show in which Walter performed a rather dramatic and somber poem, in which George took us on a musical Memory Lane of his own youth and in which Casey Biggs (Damar) performed fragments from “Stand-Up Shakespeare”. To us, Casey Biggs was our discovery at this con, the man is a wonderful speaker with lots of interesting things to say.

On Saturday, Biggs was scheduled for his Q&A which he turned into a public discussion about various things on his mind. A rather unique approach and so far removed from the usual Q&A’s. We loved this fascinating and at times thought-provoking performance.

It was the first time we met Colm Meany (O’ Brien) and the next time will probably take some time because this is one busy fellow!
He struck us as very nice and down-to-earth person, quite approachable and fun to listen to.

Saturday evening us Gold Seaters were treated to a special "Dessert Party" featuring Dominic Keating (Malcolm Reed) and Connor Trinneer. We sat at a table with rhylo and paris and we had a wonderful time: starting of with an introduction round and before we knew it we were engaged in a lively discussion about the merits (or lack of them) of Enterprise. By the time Dom joined us we politely changed the subject to something more apporopriate and welcoming to him. We asked him about his recent work and reminisced about his time at the Utopia-Outlawed convention last year: a Country& Western themed con in what Dom calls “a stable”. At the costume contest one of the participants actually danced a Can Can , which to this day “haunts” Dominic’s memories....
Connor was seated between rhylo and paris and I was sitting next to rhylo so we had an opportunity to really ‘cherish’ his presence.
After rhylo got her moment of glory, we started off by also jogging some memories about Connor’s presence at Utopia and we had a brief discussion with about how present actors are when on stage at a con and the kind of questions Connor likes to receive. “Anything non Star Trek and anything not about me, would be very welcome” was his reply. All of this emerged after talking about his Sunday Utopia Q&A which –according to some- he really did not seem to like it. I am happy to tell you that Connor thinks differently about that: he thinks more of it as ‘thought provoking’ than ‘bad’. )
Connor seemed to enjoy this discussion because they had to tap him three times in order to make him ‘move on’.

Sunday started off with Dominic and Connor on stage. At the start it was bit hesitating but after a few anecdotes (including the Can Can story by Dominic) the audience seemed to warm up (or wake up), and the whole session was delightful as usual.

Dominic has been working on a small independent movie and later this year will be seen in "Beowulf", playing –in his own words- “a slave to John Malkovich". Connor has no major projects to look forward to, he is still busy fathering son Jasper, but he expects to be called in into Vancouver to shoot some more Stargate: Atlantis stuff. Both gentlemen had been enjoying the streets of London for some days and both looked quite refreshed and relaxed.

And finally there was Patrick Stewart. On his last day off, so he told us because the next day he was scheduled to start working on two productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company: "The Tempest" en "Anthony and Cleopatra". He told us last time in Vegas that this return to the old nest has been one of his major wishes. We asked him whether theer was something to wish for now that this one had come through and he replied :”You never know what happens next. Who could have imagined what has happened with me after I signed up for Next Gen? But I will be very content if I do what I do now for the rest of my life”. Patrick has besides his Shakespeare work no big projects on the horizon, he knows nothing about an Xmen sequel, nor about Star Trek XI (although he canoot imagien him being asked for this).

Those were the guests: beside these “big names” there were a few guest actors from TOS available for autographs: Sean Kenney who played the crippled Captain Pike from "The Menagerie", Bobby Clarke who played the Gorn Captain in “Arena” , BarBara Luna who played Marlena Moreau in “Mirror Mirror”, Don Marshall who played Lt. Boma and Suzie Plakson who’s best known as TNG's K'Ehleyr. Actor Fintan McKeown (Voyager's Liam in “Fair Haven”) allegedly popped up for a while, but unfortunately we missed him.

A couple of technical things: quick to very quick autograph sessions, usually taking less than half an hour to an hour. Not much time for personal talks, unless you got lucky and there was no one else standing in line/queue at the time you were there.

Dealers: far too few. The ones we know well from FedCon, so to speak. We managed to get some niceties, e.g., an extremely soft NXO1 fleece sweater from our German dealer friends (and which Connor had to touch at the photo op)

No Minimum Bid auctions: now those were great! Every day there were many items on sale: autographs, clothing, hats, banners, and even some real props. Many items were auctioned until retail prizes were achieved, which immediately leads to a sale: a rare opportunity to obtain some really wonderful items, e.g., a City on the Edge of Forever picture signed by both William Shatner and Joan Collins.

The atmosphere: the audience was IMHO a little older and therefore more sophisticated than I usually encounter at cons. This was reflected in the entire ambiance but also in the depth of the Q&A sessions we witnessed: really thought-provoking questions and fascinating discussions. A “grown-up” convention was the term that probably describes it best.

Our Highlights:

-Walter Koenig’s work in New Voyages
-Casey Biggs
-Patrick Stewart’s autograph in my ST Encyclopedia copy...
-Connor Trinneer (as always)

Our Lows
-Cold auditorium: this is the very first convention at which I have not been overheated but instead felt cold on a regular basis.
-Uncomfortable and very narrow chairs
-Spoilt brats of children...

I've got my photos online. You're not allowed contact with the guests, and at big cons there's barely time to say hello at the autograph table or photo op. They're run for Creation's benefit.

Fedcon and Utopia on the other hand are run for the fans benefit. Guests, if they want, are actively encouraged to mingle with the attendees. There's always time for a chat, or a hug - no touching allowed with Creation.

To be fair to Creation, most of their cons are in the US and are huge events. And there are some scary fans out there. But they'd have a better reputation if they relaxed a little.

RE: Creation Con in London

Please enlighten me as i have only ever been to general conventions and not program speicfic [?] ones.

RE: Creation Con in London

Well I probably will go now that both Connor and Dominic are appearing.
