I hope the film's successful then we just might have a chance to see it somehow. I know Supersize Me did well at the Sundance Film Festival (I've got the DVD - great fim) and short films have their own category at the Oscars. So with any luck.......

I think times have changed but I also think that some people still are homophobic. I used to work with a homosexual man years ago and he used to have me in stitches - he was so funny! At the same time he used to come out with something that related to his sexual preferences and I used to think - "Errr - thats awful!" and he was the biggest 'bitch' there! He used to pull everyone to pieces and gossip like no tomorrow! He used to have crying with laughter - he was just so funny.

I started this topic off originally because even though Dominic had played gay roles before, I think they've been camp sort of roles. His role in The Attackmen movie is altogether different. I believe he gives a powerful performance in a challenging role.

The movie itself is thought provoking, dealing as it does with religious intolerance. So maybe it questions people's attitudes towards gay people as well.

It just sounds like the kind of movie that could do well at Film Festivals and cause a lot of debate.

I agree. I can understand that it could be considered a very brave move to take on that type of role... ten years ago. Not now though. I for one am not going around thinking Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are gay. (Some poeple like rps but that's a different matter altogether and no one needs the actors in a gay role to do rps!)

And yes, roaringmice brings up a good point. Consider Rock Hudson for one. The ultimate leading man of the 50s and he was homosexual so it really means nothing in the end. The only thing is the gossip mill and rumours and celeb mags etc who make a big deal of these things sometimes for no reason. Much like the idea that women must all be stick thin to look good in Hollywood.

Which brings me to say that I think a man playing a homosexual role in Hollywood is LESS daring than a woman being overweight for a role. But that's how times have changed.

Acting is acting. And if you do it convincingly then you've done your job. I could care less what type of character it is so long as the actor does what he's paid to do and does it well.

I think there's less of that than there used to be. Some years ago - not that long, actually -there was a stigma. It was a career risk to play a gay character. I remember Aidan Quinn, when he played the character in "A Touch of Frost" - the character was gay and had AIDS. There was press at the time about the risk he took playing such a character. Not so today, and thank God for that.

There will always be ignorant people who assume that, if an actor plays a gay character, the actor must also be gay. But most people are smarter than that. After all, we've had gay actors playing straight people for decades, with no one the wiser. It's acting :shrugs:

I'm not sure I agree with that. I dare say there will always be some misguided souls who think it's worse to be homosexual than to be a serial killer or rapist, but that doesn't mean the part would be any harder to play.

Oh yeah - I know what you mean. What I was meaning was it could be more demanding than usual! People may think that Dominic is gay in real life for playing that role - so I find it brave of actors and actresses to do what they do. I respect Dominic for playing such a role.

I had a similar topic on Connor Trinneers forum not so long ago with his part in 'Far East'.

Did he play the other roles as camp? Cause if so, I think people will be impressed by his performance in The Attackmen. He plays the role with a lot of bravery and that's why there could be possible awards for him (fingers crossed).

It must be quite hard to maintain an accent that you don't normally speak which must be pretty demanding on the role being played. My hat goes off to actors/actresses who can do that so well.

It's true - the general public doesn't see, or have the opportunity to see, many short films. However, they're a good way to get your name out there in the film industry, because the good ones are seen by people in that industry. You also put them on your reel. They can be a way to get your name and work out there, and you can get additional jobs from it.

In the US, the Independant Film Channel on cable shows short films quite often. They put them in between their own series and feature films. And the art cinemas in the major cities do show shorts, often either as part of a short film festival or else as a supplement to a longer film. But these things tend to be reserved for the best known, most awarded shorts.

Still, in general, if it's a short, you're not going to see it.

Linsey - I know you're trying to be realistic and not get our hopes up too high and I know I sometimes get too enthusiastic.......what can I say, I'm a born optimist!!

The Attackmen IS a short film and we know short films sometimes don't get the recognition or publicity they deserve. But I have a strong feeling that this movie is gonna do well at Film Festivals......Dominic's performance alone should guarantee that.

As for not being able to see short films at a national cinema (a scandal, they should have special screenings of short films and give people a chance to go see) or not being able to see them on tv or DVD, this might be of interest.

It's a DVD containing some of the best award winning (and Oscar nominated ) short films of 2005. There are films from the Sundance Festival, the Berlin Festival, the Edinburgh Festival and the BAFTAS to name a few. Here's hoping The Attackmen might feature on a DVD in the future!

as far as I'm aware, the attackmen is a SHORT film. regardless of success you have next to no chance of seeing it in a cinema. Short films do not get played in cinemas. if at all (very unlikely) the art cinemas are your only hope but regardless, IT DOES NOT HAPPEN.

I hate to have to stress this again but I worry that you get your hopes up over this. what you want is the festival circuit to do favourably but I have a question. at the oscars/globes/baftas... all the short film awards (all two of them), how often do you see those films at a cinema or even out on dvd with any fanfare? How many of them can you name? Heck, those presentations are mostly cut out of televised broadcasts (oscar still shows them but hey, that's oscar for you) and as for names of short films, I'm hard pressed to think of many from recent years and I'm attempting to make film my life's career!

I am very much looking forward to getting to see this film one day, I just have to be pessimistic and say it'll be a while before that happens and probably the best that could happen would be a compilation dvd, tv, or simply through contacts.

It's still in post production then when it's finished, the film has to be entered into Film Festivals and go on the Festival Circuit. It all depends on how successful it is as to whether it gets picked up by a national distributor. If it does get success and acclaim (which I have a feeling it could do) then maybe we'll have a chance to go see it.

So it could be quite a while before we heard about any release date.

From what I've heard, he gives a powerful performance in The Attackmen so I really hope he gets offered more film roles so we get to see him in demanding roles that stretch his acting to the full.

He's really had some excellent roles since he left Enterprise. I think people in Hollywood are gonna be impressed!

Hollywood Kills is one film I know will be a big success......Dominic always plays evil characters so well and he said the role stretched him. It sure looks good from the trailer.......really scary.

The Attackmen sounds like another challenging role for him as well.

So I think this could be a fantastic year for him. :)

TMG you heard him do an American accent in Broken Bow and Sleeping Dogs when he copied Trip's accent!!

He did a fantastic American accent in the film The Hollywood Sign (I think it was a New Jersey accent). From what he said, everyone on the film set was amazed when he talked in his normal English accent....they all thought he WAS American!! See, told you he was a great actor! :)

I did a post in The Attackmen thread about Dominic playing the role of an American lacrosse coach at a High School.

As well as him having an American accent.......I've found out that he plays a gay in the role. In the film he gets kicked out of the school he's teaching at. It's a controversial role and Dominic played the part with so much bravery and is so great in the role that there could be possible awards for him.

I've always said he's a great actor and even though he's famous all over the world for his Star Trek role, it sounds like this movie could REALLY get him noticed in Hollywood.

So good luck for the movie (and Dominic) when it hits the Film Festival Circuit. :)
