If there'd been a Season 5 here are some things we would've got. Shran was going to appear all season "to shake up the regulars," (according to Manny Coto).

There were going to be stories about the Romulans.

But the best bit was what happened to Trip in TATV would never have taken place...........so he'd have been in Season 5 as well!

Just think what could've been.............

In all the other Star Trek Series, they had talked about it's history, now if this one had exdplore those in a more, it could have worked. But all they have done is more of what all the others have done. There is alway an Alien where they have a conflict with, traveling back in time. A parroll universe.

It's all just different titles for the same job, really. He was in charge of the armoury, which is where the weapons are, so he's weapons officer... he's in charge of tactical readiness, hence also called tactical and security officer.

Sulu and Worf were also all 4 things. Plus whoever from ds9 (worf aswell?) and voyager (I think it's Tuvok). I never really watched ds9 and Voy.

Anyway, it would be like calling travis helmsman and... 'chief pilot' or something like that.

I know they never did, mainly because that would be stupid. malcolm just had a job that spanned a few [i]slightly[/i] different categories.

Another thing that puzzled me - Malcolm was the Armory Officer, so why was he called Security Officer, Tactical Officer and Weapons Officer? Everybody else only had 1 job - Helmsman, Chief Engineer etc. so why did Malcolm have so many?

I always thought a Major always outranked a Lieutenant so that's why I never understood Hayes calling Malcolm sir, but what you said makes sense - problem solved!

The MACOs are army, but Starfleet follows the naval rank structure. Lieutanant is a higher rank in the navy than it is in the army. A naval lieutanant outranks an army major.

And of course, Malcolm was head of security on Enterprise and so the MACOs would report to him.

Well they did say that they only used some of their charater as the main ones and that is why not all of them never got a look in. You are right, they have 7 people that made up the show and yet they seems to use about 3 of them and the others was just a back drop. I had hope that each week or so, they would have given each of the charters a chance of having a story that was set around them. No dam luck. I would have loved to have seen more od Malcolm. As I love every thing about him. That sly look that he has ('The Crossing', when he looked at the female just before he got into the life), his voice and what a lovely face.

If they were aiming Enterprise at a newer, younger audience, why did they stick to the same formula of having 3 main characters, just like TOS? They should've had Scott as the lead (of course), then the other actors having an equal share of the storylines.

We could've seen more character development and how the characters related to each other more.

Did anyone like the whole Trip/T'Pol story?

In Shuttlepod 1 we learned that Malcolm fancied her, but it wouldn't have worked cos Malcolm didn't believe in senior officers mixing with the lower ranks.

Archer and T'Pol seemed to have feelings for each other, but the Captain couldn't have a relationship with a member of his crew.

When T'Pol started feeling emotions, wouldn't it have "logical" for her to be drawn to someone completely opposite - headstrong, impulsive Trip?

We met Brannon Braga at a convention and he point blank told us that Enterprise was not meant for the fans. It was meant for an entirely new and younger audience. Numerous suggestions have been made in fora, at cons, whenever ytheer was a possibility. We even sent letters to B&B and Scott to express our concerns about this set-up, to no avail (Only that Scott did his best to portray a totally unique Starfleet Captain, something that many people do not want to acknowledge).[/quote]

That's a bit much saying it wasn't meant for the fans - I've been a ST fan all my life and out of all the ST series Enterprise is my favourite series of them all. Maybe that's were B&B went wrong, by NOT listening to the fans.

What did I like in Enterprise?

Many things! First and foremost 10 out of 10 for the actors who made this crew witty, believable and interesting to watch. Next the sheer level of detail that was used in filming the series. I liked the way old friends or foes were introduced in ways that were not to disruptive to the timeline (what timeline? A universe that allows time travel does not have one timeline). Loved the Xindi and the Suliban, loved what they did with the Andorians. Loved the mirror episodes.

What I did not like was the whole commercialisation and marketing, or rather lack thereof. It is my firm belief that if anyone should be blamed for Enterprises untimely demise it is Paramount's marketing and sales department. How can a series become successful if more than half of the word cannot see it? We had to wait 1.5 years before the first episode aired here in Holland! No wonder people start downloading!

Another one: the so go***am important ratings that determined in essence which way the show turned. That's another thing I did not like: make up your mind what you want to do with this spinoff! From episodes to continuous storyline to threeparters, let's try this, see if they'll like it, no, they don't, let's try something else. O yeah, and let's throw in some flesh to try to reach the American Model audience!

This proves to me that people like Joss Whedon, J. Michael Straczynski, Rockne O 'Bannon and nowadays Ronald Moore and Ira Behr are superior to B&B: they had a vision and they made it happen regardless of what the ratings would dictate.

A final dislike: the Trip/T'Pol affair. A very blatant example of cheap storytelling. A child could see that there was tension between the two from day one, yet only in soaps this turns out the way portrayed. But I am not a soap fan.

Don't get me wrong: ENT is still my number two ST show (DS9 being my alltime favorite), and even though my dislikes seem greater than my likes, I assure you that's not the case.

When Enterprise was struggling in the ratings, the writers and execs were trying to find ways to boost the ratings - why didn't they just ask us? We're the fans who supported the show all along and WE know what we wanted to see. ( More Malcolm for starters ).

They should've gone to the cons and got input from the fans or asked for suggestions on these forums. Maybe we could've helped to save the show - who knows?

some of the enterprise actos criticised enterprise too when it deserved it. and I've not seen of many dissers myself in the trek actor community. marina did say some things before.. when we saw her she was also drunk and there was this rivalry between her and dominic as it was... they're both the queens of the con circuit.. some of that I think was just friendly rivalry too though.

difficult to judge, I find, but that's just because I've not seem much of it maybe.

I still can't understand why some of the other ST actors criticised Enterprise so much. Were they frightened of Enterprise being more popular than their shows?

Maybe they were jealous of a newer, younger and fitter cast coming along. But they go to the cons and they must see how popular the Enterprise stars are. So is it jealousy?

They're all part of the ST "family" so you'd think they'd be happy to see a new show carrying on the ST ideals and beliefs. So they should've supported the show.

Totally agree with you. Have totally gone off TNG after meeting Marina Sirtis. she was just nothing but arrogant and horrilbe about Enterprise, so you can imagine how I felt when I found out that that talentless dog was doing OUR finale.

You know what I hate about Enterprise's cancellation? It's how many other ST actors have come forward and said that "Enterprise should never have been made, they should rest the franchise and have a different cast/crew, ours was the best show" etc, etc.......

It's alright for them to talk. In most cases they had the full 7 series or a run of films and in TNG's case they had 7 series AND films. Enterprise only got 4 series and they had to put up with criticism, being moved around the tv schedules, no publicity and lack of support by the execs. It's amazing they produced such quality episodes under those circumstances.

But I read an interview about Leonard Nimoy. In it he said he didn't expect to like Enterprise but he'd watched it and liked it! So there's someone with excellent taste!

I bought Total DVD mag Issue 80 and in it they review series 3 of Enterprise. They say "The cliffhanger will have your jaw dropping" and they praise the "excellent disc package, the usual lush packaging and the excellent sound and dialogue."

Then they spoil it by saying "rather than wander around aimlessly, Enterprise developed a bit more energy this season." - They were exploring the galaxy NOT wandering aimlessly.

They mention "turning the dirge-like ballard into a soft rock version." Dirge- like? I LOVED the theme tune (before they altered it), it was uplifting and inspiring.

They say "some good episodes make this the least worst season of Enterprise." - What?? Have I been watching a different Star Trek to them? Season 1 was good, but series 2 was BRILLIANT!!

This is very interesting. I think it would have made for a stronger show, overall, if there were some decent female relationships on it. I mean, come on. In a crew of 84, there are relatively few women (it seems), so wouldn't the women that were there become friends? And since Hoshi and T'Pol are the only female bridge crew, wouldn't at least some sort of relationship have been built there? There was a bit going on in the first season, but nothing really came of it, which is too bad.

Trip's nickname was originallu to be 'spike'. they always wanted a nickname for him but uhm... I think Spike was rather taken already! So they went with the Trip thing.

Malcolm was going to be a Lt. Commander, even after Trip was known as a Commander, but last I heard, he was Lt. Comm right up til near shooting when they realised they didn't know how to do the pips for him or something so he got demoted. Not sure if that's fan conjecture or fact, but in all the magazines doing previews for Enterprise, Malcolm was always listed as Lt. C.

And they also did the thing where he was supposed to be a contradiction. Loved blowing things up but didn't like the noise so he wore ear muff thingies. Or something.

Not to mention that he was going to be gay.. but that's the kind of rumour that spread when you first meet Rick and Brannon in a gay bar ;)

Here are some interesting bits of info:

Charles Tucker was going to be known as Charlie. He got his "the third" and "Trip" nickname late on in the writing for Broken Bow. His original rank was Lieutenant and he was listed as being best friends with Lieutenant Mayweather.

Hoshi and T'Pol were going to have a conflictual relationship but were also best friends who would die for each other.

The most interesting part was that Malcolm was meant to be a Lieutenant Commander. So he would've sat at the Captain's table and not Trip! I guess they changed it so that Archer, Trip and T'Pol were the "main" characters just like Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

It makes you wonder how Enterprise would've been had they stuck to the original ideas.

broken bow got a lot of viewers, but i also think most of those viewers are the types like my dad is. he watches the pilots of all the treks 'just because' it's a trek pilot, but he's not interested in watching any others, just those first episodes to see what they've done with it since he watched TOS as a boy.

there are plenty of people who will watch a trek pilot like that, and other types of spin off pilots, just because it's there, then they don't watch anymore. a taste is all they ever wanted.

to be honest, I'm glad we got the 4 seasons we did, even if some of it was crap, and that's because for certain, the cast wouldn't be our cast and the enterprise we know wouldn't be the enterprise we got if it was say... filming now for a feature before launching any series.

i got what I wanted out of enterprise before it got destroyed, I'm happy with that. and not having three more years saved me from more tucker/tpol drivel (which, going by TATV I would have been spared 'theoretically' anyway) ... I just get to miss out on some things I would have loved to have seen.. but the pessimist inside me tells me I'd never see them anyway so it's best to leave it to the fans to decide the fates of the characters now.

for a start, in my head malcolm got promoted. :)

Interesting you should mention reality shows. The Screen Actors Guild said that because of those type of shows there were 3500 fewer tv roles for actors.

I've been thinking. You know how Broken Bow got about 14 million viewers when it was shown on tv? I wonder whether Paramount should've released it as a feature film first, before they even thought of doing a series. They could have shown it a year after Voyager ended and after the Nemesis film. People would've been curious about a new and younger cast. Maybe they'd have had a hit movie on their hands and they'd have been more willing about a series.

I read that the first draft of the 11th ST film has been presented to Paramount. It's supposed to be called Star Trek: The Beginning and is set after Enterprise but before TOS. It'll have a new cast. But if it's called The Beginning are they gonna ignore Enterprise?

I only ever watched TNG and Enterprise (I have watched all of TOS but that doesn't count.. I never watched it while it was on growing up etc. it's also too cheesy to be proper star trek for me in some ways)... mainly because the settings and the cast I believe were always the best... especially in their time periods. i.e. TNG was very late 80s/early 90s and enterprise was a very new millenium show in their outlook in how they solved each problem in the star trek-y way.

which is probably why I liked TATV.. I liked Riker... I liked Geordi and data and picard... heck, once more we see that star trek employed good actors in their lead males ;)

i'm not sure why the network kept going with it. there are a few theories in my head though. it could have been contractual with paramount in the first place... it could also have easily been to do with changeovers. which was the reason we lost enterprise.. was because all the trek fans at paramount left/got fired etc. this is how hollywood/networks etc work.

the new head of programming comes in and will ditch EVERYTHING the predecessor did. because if it succeeds and something s/he chooses fails then it weighs heavily that predecessor may have been better etc. it's the politics of the industry. it's often why we lose great tv projects. dead like me fell victim to a showtime changeover, enterprise to the paramount overhaul.

there are many films that never get made or take 10 years more to ever make based on the same reasoning. I think the princess bride was one of those films. should have been made in the 70s, but lose the support at a studio and suddenly it's in the bin.

it's also getting worse. due to the face that studios want a quick buck nowadays. market the reality show that lasts one year and force the following year to be new and fresh and the next etc... rather than considering a product that will not just last it's possible 7 year run, but still be popular for years, and still sell based on that. they don't take that kind of risk anymore. which is why successful shows that last a long time a pretty rare these days. and most need a few years of obscurity to kick off.

I could never understand why they didn't promote Enterprise more. If the studios didn't want another ST series then why bother making it? They bounced the show all round the tv schedules - no wonder some people stopped watching it.

Maybe they should've waited a couple of years before showing it then people would've been eager to see it. It started off just as Voyager was ending and TNG film Nemesis failed at the box office.

It just seems a shame that it ended so soon and with the TATV episode - Enterprise was the best ST series of the lot, had the best group of actors and should have gone the full 7 series.

they won't do a new series. to the network and to paramount that's a) too much like giving in at such a late stage and b) saying 'they were wrong'. and TPTB are never wrong no matter what.

Possibly a feature if someone became huge? maybe. but Bakula is pretty damn big and there's bugger all going on. It's about getting the cast back together at a time when they're all available and the script is written etc etc. and it's not going to happen.

the actors have moved on, and if one of them did 'get big' and TPTB decided they'd like a shot at more likelihood is that actor, now being 'big' would get far better offers and be far more busy.

enterprise is pretty much screwed.

What do you think would happen if one of the cast became a big movie star (pref Dominic)? Do you think Paramount would suddenly be interested in Enterprise? Would the cast be willing to do more series?

Or maybe they'd do an Enterprise film? After all, Josh Whedan's had a hit with the Serenity film.
